Basic Questions to Evaluate for Learning Disabilities


Questions to ask about reading

  • Can the child decode words at age level?

  • Can the child read fluently and understand what he or she is reading?


Questions to ask about writing

  • Can the child print the letters of the alphabet and transcribe letters fluently?

  • Can the child spell properly, have the printed word in the child’s mind’s eye and then reproduce it on the page?

  • Can the child do that whole process fluently and smoothly, and then can the child write sentences? Compositions?


Questions to ask about math

  • Does the child have a sense of numbers?

  • Does the child understand bigger or smaller?

  • Does the child understand that numbers have to be listed in their correct order?

  • Does the child know that when you are counting objects that you have to be able to count all of the objects in order to arrive at the total?

  • Can the child complete basic addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division problems? Can the child perform these calculations quickly?
