What is the requirement?
Beginning on June 27, 2023, all DEA-registered and new medical practitioners must check a box on their license application or renewal attesting that they have completed 8-hours of training on the treatment and management of patients with opioid or other substance use disorders. Complete information about the requirement is posted on the DEA website—specifically in this PDF letter introducing the requirement. Here's the bottom line.
- If you are renewing your three-year DEA license or applying for a new license, you must complete 8 hours of training in opioid use disorder or other substance use disorders.
- The renewal application does not require you to upload the certificates verifying the 8 hours of training. You must simply check a box attesting that you have completed the requirement.
- We recommend that you complete the training and keep the certificates on hand in case you are ever asked what kind of opioid or substance abuse training you completed.
