MST is an investigational form of treatment for depression. Similar to electroconvulsive therapy (ECT), MST induces seizures with the intention of therapeutic benefit, but the big difference between MST and ECT is how the seizure is induced. In ECT, you use electricity directly applied to the scalp, whereas with MST you use a magnetic coil. Dr. Collier is the director of education in the Division of Geriatric Psychiatry at McLean Hospital and an instructor in psychiatry at Harvard Medical School. Dr. Collier completed her psychiatry residency at Duke University Medical Center and fellowship in consultation-liaison psychiatry at Brigham and Women’s Hospital. Dr. Collier teaches and supervises medical students, residents, and fellows in geriatric psychiatry, and she works on projects training non-specialist clinicians in resource-limited settings.
