Given how many essentially equivalent medications we have to choose from, how great would it be to have a test that tells us which drug to prescribe for which patient? Everybody wants personalized medicine, and in some other specialties, such as oncology, this is becoming a standard part of treatment. In this article, we’ll review some of the basics of pharmacogenetic testing and examine in more detail the commercial genetic tests that are currently available.

It’s no secret that SSRIs and SNRIs cause sexual dysfunction (SD) in a large proportion of patients who take them. The exact size of that proportion, though, is difficult to pinpoint with any reliability. Most of the large clinical trials of antidepressants ascertain side effects through spontaneous reports, and research subjects are understandably embarrassed about coming out and complaining about sexual problems.

The average annual wage for U.S. psychiatrists in 2015 is about $194,000 (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics). According to a 2011 salary survey, the average salary of a prison psychiatrist in the U.S. is $204,909. And these averages are probably on the low side.
