We worry that oral contraceptives impact mood, particularly in adolescents who are prone to depression and other mood disorders. This research review on the Dutch TRAILS (Tracking Adolescents’ Individual Lives Survey) helps balance our decision making so that we avoid either extreme of universally counseling against their use nor dismissing the possible impact of OCs on mood.

More is not necessarily better in psychopharmacology. Some medications have plateau effect, while others follow a “U-shaped curve,” causing more problems as the dose goes too high. This metaanalysis looked at 77 dose-response trials with antidepressants to quantify their optimal therapeutic window.

A randomized, double- blind, placebo-controlled trial studying the effects of olanzapine on change in body weight and obsessionality in adult outpatients with anorexia nervosa. Although strength of the study includes its large sample size, it is undetermined if patient weight gain is due to a therapeutic effect on anorexia or to olanzapine’s known metabolic effects.
