ADHD is relatively common in adults, with conservative estimates of a 4%–5% prevalence in the adult population, equal in men and women. However, only about 10% of adults with ADHD are receiving treatment for their condition. Over the past decade, it’s become apparent that ADHD does not suddenly end when children grow up, and that the disorder often continues into adulthood. Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is the most common psychiatric disorder in veterans who seek treatment at the VA, and substance use disorder (SUD) is a common comorbid condition. While SSRIs can be effective for PTSD symptoms, they don’t treat SUD well.
